In the first chapter, the narrator switches from Robert Walton to the ill stranger that he became friends with on the ship, Victor Frankenstein. Victor begins to tell readers about his early childhood, his birth, and his family background. He mentions Alphonse, his father; and Caroline, his mother. Alphonse was very close friends with Caroline's father, Beaufort, for many years. But two years after Beaufort died, Alphonse and Caroline married and gave birth to Victor soon after.
The city and country Victor hails from.
Brevin's Commentary: This chapter was really boring, and was just background information setting up the plot of the story. I really can't connect with Victor, as he was an only child, except for an adoptive sister that he basically is just trying to protect from all of the evil in the world. He seems to come from a really fancy family, so I can't relate to any of his childhood up to this point.
