![]() Victor is introduced to his magistrate, described as a benevolent old man with mild manners. This old man by the name of Mr. Kirwin was the man who would be conducting Victor's court issues with him being tried on accounts of murder. In the court there about a half a dozen men who came forward as witnesses. The men were fishermen who came into port early due to a storm. The men then walked along the shoreline for a couple miles where they found a dead body. The dead body was then brought to a woman's house where they tried to revive it to no avail. The man appeared to have been strangled due to the black marks of a hand around his throat. Victor's magistrate noticed that he look bothered by the description of the mans death, so he took him to see the body. As Victor walked in he would to his utmost surprise see that this dead man was Henry, his best friend. Upon seeing his best friend dead Victor collapsed on his coffin in dread, he became so ill that he started having spasms on the floor and had to be carried out of the room. Victor had dreams of Henry and the monster strangling him, he also during this time shouted many things in his native language, blaming himself for the deaths for Henry, William, and Justine.

![]() Victor now awoke on a bed in a cell. Victor had noticed as well that there was a nurse hired by Mr. Kirwin to keep him alive. Mr. Kirwin who had heard and understood Victors cries in his sleep had also received and read letters sent to Victor and had informed his family of Victor's situation. Since Victor's family received letters about his situation his father left to join Victor. Victor in his terrible condition meets his father at the jail and gradually began to recover from the event. Victor was soon proven innocent as no solid evidence could be presented against him other than coincidences. Victor and his father then head back to Geneva. Brevin's Commentary: Once again, the monster takes out an innocent victim because Victor can't take care of his hideous "child". All joking aside though, it really does seem unfortunate that just because Henry was friends with Victor, he got strangled to death and left on the beach. This doesn't seem like symbolism of thematic, just a case of the monster destroying everything Victor loves because Victor abandoned him. At least Victor is continuing to take responsibility for the death of all of his friends and family. |
