The fourth letter started out urgent, as the Robert's ship has been encompassed by ice and a thick fog. After a few hours the fog cleared up and their were broad plains of ice around. With nothing to do the men just looked around. After looking for a while the men soon saw a sledge out in the distance being drawn by dogs. After a while the figure was lost in the distance with the ice. The ice cleared up that night, but due to large pieces floating close to the ship the sailors waited. The next morning Robert awoke to the sailors huddled at one side of the ship. A man with a sledge and one dog left alive had floated up near them on a piece of broken ice. The man was brought aboard the ship. The funny thing was that the man wasn't some savage, as he was both European and spoke english (with an accent). The man asked about the other sledge and referred to whatever was on it as a "devil" Robert grew very fond of this unknown man think him as a brother to himself, he had wished to know this man more. The man over the next couple weeks had mentioned to Robert of the very unfortunate tragedies he had, then through some talking he became willing to tell Robert his story after he got over his grief to start his life over again. The stranger then told Robert to write down the accounts of his story as closely to every word as he could go.
