After Justine's death, Victor gets quite upset. He says that the guilt and remorse he feels makes his life a living hell, and even considers committing suicide for a little bit as he is approaching the shore across from Geneva. However, he restrains himself by thinking of his love, Elizabeth, and all of the grief that it would cause her if he died. He also thinks of his father and surviving brother, and the effects that his death would have on them. He ends up taking a long trip to Chamounix, which is a valley in France. He goes there to relax his mind and get peace, and he finds it in the serenity of the mountains. He ends up finding a great amount of pleasure in the mountains, and is able to continue on his trek to the Arveiron.

Destiny's Thoughts/Comments
I can understand and somewhat relate to the feelings of guilt and remorse that Victor is experiencing. But it shocked me because I didn't realize that he was so unbearably upset to the extent that he actually considered taking his own life. I tried to imagine myself in his shoes, and I realized that the situation must have been really tough on him. But for being so distraught to the point where he wanted to kill himself, he must have had a lot of self-control to think about the negative effect it would have on his family and be able to keep himself sane enough to not end his own life. |
