In Robert Walton's second letter to his sister, Margaret Saville, he explains that he has hired a vessel to take him and his crew to the North Pole. He tells her that he is actively looking for a crew, and that the time is passing too slowly for him. He lets her know that he is feeling lonely and isolated and that he lacks any friends. He thinks that there is nobody that shares the same drive that he does, and this causes him to feel that he is too mature to be able to bond with the ship's crew. He also acknowledges that he is not very well educated, which doesn't allow him find someone that he can have a deep and meaningful relationship with.
