Victor says to Walton now that it is nice to have a friend, but for as much as he has lost he still can not head back to civilization, as he only lives now to enact his vengeance on the monster. A month later the ship get's stuck in mountains of ice with no way to escape. After a few days men start dieing and moral lowers to the point where the men consider mutiny. Victor however holds a rousing speech which dissuades the men from mutiny for a time and to continue to move north. Soon however Walton agree's to head south when the ice breaks up. After another five days the ice breaks up and Walton is heading home. Victor though when the ship was stuck became increasingly ill until he died when the ship became free, but Walton promised to kill the monster if he were to ever see it. That same night the monster boards the ship to see Victor's body, and starts whining about his lack of purpose in life now. Walton then tells the monster that if he should not be so hypocritical after causing such desolation, but the monster responds by telling him that he didn't love everything he did, and that everyone he killed broke his heart even further to where Victor's endless pursuit was the only thing keeping him alive. The monster then goes off the boat to kill himself in a fiery death.
