The enlightenment period produced many new concepts, ideas, and ideological thinkers. These thinkers began to push the envelope towards more forward and progressive thinking, rather than allowing the church to give out spiritual reasoning for events. Speculations about the world were tested, and many things that were once commonly thought correct were proved to be false, and new information was acquired daily. This period followed the Renaissance, a period where music and the arts became more progressive than they previously were. Many great thinkers of this time published books, and as more people became literate, they began to learn new ideas and follow them. The new pursuit and grasp of knowledge led to many of the commoners wanting better economic and political situations, rather than accepting the situations they were born into. These views led to changes in government and society, and was a major historical event that allowed Mary Shelley to be able to write this book.
