Now Victor has lost all voluntary thought. Rage is all that carried him away, and the thought of revenge is the only thing that gave him strength and composure. Victor's first thought was to leave Geneva forever, because he decided that it would be horrible that he would die and leave the monster to live on. As Victor tries to find the monster in the night he finds nothing, but after praying for strength to his dead friends and family he is answered by the monster's laugh. The monster says that he is satisfied that Victor is miserable and alive just like himself. victor then ran to where he heard the monster speak, but as he got there he saw the monster run with inhuman speed in the distance. This has been Victors job for many months where he has chased the monster. Victor chased the monster through Tartary and Russia where peasants would give him directions, but the monster would also purposely leave trails and clues for Victor to continue his chase. Whenever Victor seemed to be defeated by hunger, sleep, and the elements he always pulled through as if he had some divine help. Whenever Victor sleeps he sees his friends and family and believes the world he is chasing the monster in to be a dream. Victor kept following the monster northward until he hit ice and bought a dog sledge where he crossed over onto the frozen ocean and followed the monster up to the arctic circle above Russia where he pursued the monster until the ice broke where he accepted his fate until he saw a ship. If this ship was going north he would board, if south he would die.
Brevin's Commentary:
This last chapter was really sad. Victor chases his creation around, and eventually the monster tells Victor that he just wants him to be as miserable as the monster has been for most of his life. That just crushed me, as I can't even imagine how disappointing it must be to live your whole life and not be loved just because of how you look. I also feel bad for Victor, as his one neglectful mistake has led to the death of many people, which is really unfortunate. In the end, it's just a situation where everybody loses, and nobody can win.
